PROBLEMS OF SAKSONOV

(Continued from page 65) aspect of Saksonov's progress played a vital part in the eclipse, temporary or otherwise, of a very great athlete. Both Udodov and Chimishkyan made "huge" presses of 236 and 231 lbs. repectively, during the championship lifting. Both lifters made fantastic 771-lb. totals . . . Udodov taking 2nd place by virtue of slightly heavier. body weight. Chimishkyan c&jerked 3151⁄2 lbs. with an additional attempt

.which really means that he is capable of 782 lbs.

And in the beginning of 1955 news came through that the one-time bantam-wt. lifter Ivan Udodov (now fully-fudged feather-wt has totalled 782-13 with lifts of 245-231-303-lbs. The big question is: can Sakonov rise superior to onslaughts of this calibre? Frankly, it seems extremely doubtful. Sakonov's best 748-lb. effort is now about 30 lbs. inferior to his two compatriots . . . and there is no guarantee that they will not find it possible to make still further improvement in their individual performances.

Eighteen months ago Nikolai Saksonov was one of the key men of Soviet international lifting, but today the situation is so truly extraordinary... that is quite within the bounds of possibility he may never lift in a world tournament again.

If the points I have made turn out to be correct it will constitute the greatest "eclipse" ever known in the weightlifting game.

His best life-time lifts, at the moment of writing these lines, add up (214-238-314 lbs.) to 766 lbs.

Being somewhat tall... he might find it possible to weigh-in as a lightwt and astonish followers of our cult with unexpected performances just as Ivan Udodov has done.

When Tony Terlazzo went from the feather-wt to the light-wt ranks some years ago... he added more than a hundred pounds to his total. But this is only idle speculation... 'nough said.

Nikolai is now 30 years of age. He was not a "natural" strongman, but got to the "top" the hard way. When the Russian homeland was menaced he exchanged life at a navigation college for an infantryman's uniform in the army. He fought in long battles from Stalingrad to Berlin, gathering four machine-gun wounds in the process. When eventually he returned home, his arm power was much affected by these injuries, and he had to overcome great obstacles when weight training was recommenced.

Some idea of his desperate struggle may be realized from the following figures. In 1946 he could total only 440 lbs. A year later he still fell short of the 600-lb. mark. 1948 was a year of encouragement for he reached 661 lbs. One year later he managed to notch 689 lbs and in 1950 his gruelling struggles brought him a 725-lb. total and his first world record snatch with a lift of 232 lbs. soon afterwards raised to 2331⁄2 lbs.

Still not content to rest upon his laurels, in 1951 he acquired the clean

& jerk world record with a lift of 304

66

lbs. He had definitely established himself as one of the foremost Olympic weight lifters of the world .. overcoming by patient preseverance and grit all previous handicaps. Early in 1952, before the Finnish Olympiad took place, he made an official total of 738 lbs., and the stage seemed all set for a wonderful debut at the Olympiad. Alas for the plans of mice and men ... A 23-year-old feather-wt named Rafael Chimishkyan was also making astounding progress.

The clashes of these two men rank among the most glittering happenings of the weight-lifting world. But, if anyone present at Stockholm in 1953 had prophesied that within twelve months Saxonov's winning total of 742 lbs would be raised to the 771-lb. level by TWO OTHER LIFTERS, such a prophet would have been deemed a fit candidate for any madhouse.

Although he must have been emotionally disturbed at not being in the lifting at Vienna, one could not tell anything from his appearance which, as usual, vas masklike. During the lifting Nikolai busied himself with his camera, taking shots of the others. His unsmiling face, bluntly chiselled features, and pink shaven head drew much attention, naturally. But he was oblivious to it all. This athlete has a good brain, and plenty of character. He has the capacity to rise to great occasions in his own good time. He may henceforth concentrate upon improving his wonderful squat snatch, and clean & jerk records to the exclution of all other angles.

With such an admirable background and with a trainer and friend such as Yakov Kutsenko to help and advise, the solving of difficult problems may yet be mastered.
